Compassion for the Fearful / Division and Decline - Melakhim Aleph (1 Kings)
Heavenly Father, YHVH, thank You for bringing us safely into Your holy Shabbat. We lay aside the burdens of the past week and enter Your appointed rest with grateful hearts. Open our minds to receive Your instruction, strengthen our faith through Your Word, and renew our desire to walk faithfully in Your covenant. May this Shabbat draw us closer to You and to one another as we worship You in spirit and in truth.
As we partake of the bread, we remember Yahusha HaMashiach, the Bread of Life, whose body was given for us.
As we drink from the cup, we remember the renewed covenant established through His blood, giving thanks for the forgiveness, reconciliation, and hope we have through Him.
May this communion strengthen our commitment to walk faithfully in obedience to YHVH's Torah and to live as ambassadors of His Kingdom until Messiah returns.
“And the officers shall speak further to the people, and say: ‘What man is there who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go and return to his house, lest the heart of his brothers melt like his heart.’”

“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear nor be afraid of them, for YHVH your Elohim, He Himself is walking with you. He shall not fail you nor forsake you.”

YHVH's Torah recognises that fear can affect a person's ability to function in difficult circumstances. Rather than humiliating those who were fearful or forcing them into a responsibility they were not prepared to fulfil, the officers were instructed to release them from military duty. This protected both the individual and the courage of the wider community.
Compassion does not mean surrendering to fear. It means recognising human limitations while encouraging people to trust YHVH and fulfil the responsibilities appropriate to their circumstances. Righteous leadership knows when courage must be strengthened and when someone should be allowed to step aside without shame.
The history of the divided kingdom provides another important lesson about the consequences of fear, pride and poor leadership. After the death of Shelomoh, Rehoboam rejected the wise counsel of the elders and chose the harsher advice of the younger men who served with him. His decision contributed to the division of the kingdom, while Jeroboam established patterns of false worship that led Yisrael further away from Torah.
The history recorded in Melakhim Aleph (1 Kings) 12–22 shows that political power cannot preserve a people who have abandoned righteous obedience. Yet YHVH did not abandon His people without warning. Through His prophets, He repeatedly confronted wrongdoing and called the people and their leaders back to truth.
These themes belong together. Fear can contribute to poor decisions, while pride can prevent leaders from recognising their mistakes. Compassion, humility and wise counsel can help prevent division before it becomes deeply rooted. YHVH calls us to strengthen those who are fearful without allowing fear to govern us, and to pursue unity without compromising truth.
As followers of Yahusha HaMashiach, we are likewise called to encourage one another toward faithfulness. We must neither despise those who struggle with fear nor allow fear, pride or self-interest to determine the direction of our families, communities or fellowship. True strength is found in trusting YHVH, listening to wise counsel and remaining faithful to His ways.
Examine your own response to fear this Shabbat. When someone around you is struggling, do you respond with compassion and encouragement, or with impatience and judgment? Do you know when to strengthen someone and when to recognise that they need time to step back?
Also examine your response to leadership and disagreement. Do pride, fear or personal preference influence the way you respond to counsel? Rehoboam's failure reminds us that rejecting wise advice can have consequences far beyond the original decision.
Choose today to encourage rather than shame, listen before reacting, seek wise counsel and pursue unity without compromising truth. Let your decisions strengthen rather than divide the people around you.
Heavenly Father, YHVH, thank You for teaching us compassion, humility, wisdom and faithful obedience.
Teach us to respond to fearful people with patience rather than contempt. Help us to recognise the burdens others carry and to encourage them without placing unnecessary shame upon them.
Give courage to those who are afraid, wisdom to those who lead and discernment to those who must decide when to step forward and when to step aside.
Guard our families and communities from the divisions that arise through pride, fear, anger and self-interest. Keep us from repeating the failures of those who placed human ambition above obedience to You.
Help us to learn from the history of Yisrael and to recognise how quickly division can grow when people abandon Your ways. Give us hearts that seek reconciliation, ears that listen to correction and spirits that remain humble before You.
We pray for peace in the Middle East, South Africa and throughout the world. In this time of continued tension and uncertainty, especially in and around Yisrael and its neighbouring nations, bring restraint where conflict threatens to grow, grant wisdom to leaders, protect innocent lives and establish Your righteousness and lasting peace according to Your perfect will.
We pray for an end-time revival. Awaken hearts across every nation, call people to repentance, restore a deep love for Your truth and raise up faithful servants who will proclaim the Good News of Your Kingdom with boldness and humility.
We pray for the elderly, especially those who suffer from loneliness, neglect or abuse. Surround them with loving families, compassionate caregivers and faithful believers who will honour them with dignity, kindness and practical support.
We pray for farmers and all who labour to provide food for their communities. Protect them from violence, strengthen them through every hardship, bless the work of their hands and grant favourable seasons that will produce abundant harvests.
We pray for those affected by wars, natural disasters and humanitarian crises. Comfort those who grieve, heal the injured, provide for the displaced and restore hope to those whose lives have been shaken by suffering and loss.
We pray for evangelists, teachers, missionaries and all faithful servants who proclaim Your truth throughout the world. Strengthen them with wisdom, courage and endurance, protect them where persecution is increasing and open doors for the Good News to reach many hearts.
We pray for those who are ill, especially those battling cancer, chronic diseases and emerging viral outbreaks. Stretch out Your healing hand, guide those who provide medical care, strengthen families walking alongside them and fill every heart with hope and peace.
We pray concerning the coming tribulation and the signs unfolding before our eyes. Grant Your people discernment, steadfast faith and spiritual maturity. Help us to remain watchful, prepared and unwavering as we await the return of Yahusha HaMashiach.
We lift up Derech Olam Ministries before You. Direct every decision according to Your perfect will, provide every resource needed for the work You have entrusted to us, open doors that no one can shut, bless every ministry platform and let Your Name alone receive all honour and glory.
