Sanctity of Community Space
“And you shall appoint for yourselves cities. Cities of refuge they are to you, that the manslayer who strikes someone accidentally may flee there.”
- Bemidbar (Numbers) 35:11
“And the congregation shall deliver the manslayer from the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge where he had fled. And he shall dwell there until the death of the high priest who was anointed with the set-apart oil.”

“And you shall not defile the land in which you dwell, in which I dwell among the children of Yisrael, for I, YHVH, dwell among the children of Yisrael.”

YHVH established cities of refuge as a means of protecting life while preserving justice. These cities provided a defined place where someone who had caused a death unintentionally could find protection from the avenger of blood while the matter was properly dealt with.
The arrangement demonstrates that community space was not merely geographical. A place could be designated for a specific righteous purpose and protected so that justice, mercy and due process could operate together.
The Torah also connects the sanctity of the land with the presence of YHVH among His people. Because YHVH dwelt among Yisrael, the land was not to be defiled by bloodshed or injustice. The community therefore carried a collective responsibility to protect the character of the spaces entrusted to them.
The spaces we share with others are shaped by how we behave within them. A community becomes safer and more honourable when its people recognise that their actions affect everyone around them.
YHVH's provision of cities of refuge shows that righteous community life requires both protection and accountability. Mercy did not mean ignoring justice, while justice did not mean abandoning the vulnerable.
May we therefore treat our homes, congregations, communities and other shared spaces with respect. Let our presence contribute to peace, safety, dignity and righteousness rather than fear, disorder or harm.
Heavenly Father, YHVH, thank You for teaching us to value life, justice, mercy and the sanctity of the spaces You entrust to Your people. Help us to take responsibility for the effect our words and actions have upon those around us. Make our homes, communities and places of fellowship safe places where truth, compassion and righteousness can flourish. Give us wisdom to protect the vulnerable, courage to address wrongdoing and humility to accept accountability. May Your presence among us be honoured by the way we treat one another and the spaces we share.
