Justice - Holiness Amid Conflict
“Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give him My covenant of peace; and it shall be to him and to his descendants after him a covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was zealous for his Elohim, and made atonement for the children of Yisrael.’”

“And YHVH spoke to Mosheh, saying, ‘Harass the Midianites and strike them, for they harassed you with their schemes by which they deceived you in the matter of Peor.’”

The account of Peor presents a difficult but important dimension of Torah: the responsibility to protect the covenant community from deliberate actions that sought to draw Yisrael into idolatry and sexual immorality.
Pinchas responded decisively when the covenant was being openly violated, and YHVH acknowledged his zeal for Him. Yet this passage must not be separated from the wider Torah principle that justice belongs to YHVH and that human action is governed by His commands rather than personal anger or vengeance.
The subsequent command concerning Midian was therefore not a licence for uncontrolled violence. It was a specific judgement within a specific covenantal context. Torah distinguishes between righteous obedience to a command of YHVH and human retaliation driven by hatred, rage or personal grievance.
Conflict creates a powerful temptation to abandon restraint. When people believe that their cause is righteous, they can easily begin to justify actions that YHVH has never commanded.
The holiness of Yisrael was not protected by uncontrolled anger. It was protected by obedience to YHVH. Pinchas' action was commended because it occurred within the specific circumstances and divine command recorded in Torah, not because zeal itself makes every violent action righteous.
This distinction remains important. Justice must never become a disguise for vengeance, and zeal for YHVH must never become permission to act according to our own desires.
As followers of Yahusha HaMashiach, we are called to remain faithful to truth while refusing to let hatred govern our hearts. We can oppose wrongdoing without becoming consumed by the spirit of the wrongdoing we oppose.
Heavenly Father, YHVH, thank You for teaching us that holiness requires obedience, discernment and self-control. Help us to distinguish between righteous obedience to Your commands and human anger disguised as zeal. Guard our hearts when we encounter conflict, injustice or deliberate wrongdoing. Give us wisdom to know when to speak, when to act and when to leave judgement in Your hands. Keep us from hatred, vengeance and uncontrolled anger, while giving us courage to stand firmly for truth and righteousness. May our zeal for You always remain governed by Your Word and directed toward holiness.
