Protection of Captives
“Remember those in bonds as if you were bound with them, and those who are mistreated, since you yourselves are in the body also.”

YHVH's Torah teaches His people to recognise the suffering of those who are vulnerable, oppressed and deprived of freedom. The command to rescue those being taken away to death establishes a responsibility to act when human life is threatened rather than remaining indifferent to the suffering of others.
The Renewed Covenant likewise calls us to remember those in bonds as though we ourselves were bound with them. Captivity separates people from their families, communities and ordinary freedoms, often placing them under the control of those who may cause them harm.
Protection of captives therefore requires more than awareness. It calls for compassion, remembrance, prayer and action wherever action is possible. Those who are held captive must not become forgotten simply because their suffering is distant from us.
It is easy to feel powerless when we hear about people being held captive far from us. Yet distance does not make their suffering less real, and YHVH does not ask us to forget those who are suffering simply because we cannot see them.
To remember captives as though we ourselves were bound with them changes how we respond. We begin to see the person rather than merely the circumstance. We recognise the fear, uncertainty and separation that captivity can bring, and we seek their protection before YHVH.
May we therefore refuse indifference toward those who are held against their will. May we pray for their safety, remember them before YHVH, and support every righteous effort to protect life and secure their freedom. Compassion should move us from merely knowing about suffering to caring about those who suffer.
Heavenly Father, YHVH, we bring before You all those who are held captive, imprisoned unjustly, abducted or otherwise deprived of their freedom. Protect them from violence, cruelty, hunger, disease and despair. Strengthen them in their fear and uncertainty, and preserve their lives.
Remember those who are separated from their families and loved ones. Give wisdom and courage to those working for their release, and guide every effort that seeks to protect innocent life and restore freedom.
Restrain those who intend evil against the captives. Expose hidden places of captivity, bring truth to light, and open righteous ways for those who are held to return safely to their families.
Teach us not to become indifferent to the suffering of others. Help us to remember those in bonds as though we ourselves were bound with them, and to respond with compassion, prayer and whatever righteous action is within our ability.
May the captives not be forgotten, and may Your justice, mercy and protection prevail.
