Justice - Guarding Against Abuse
“Do not pervert the right of your poor in his dispute. Keep far from a false matter, and do not kill the innocent and righteous, for I will not justify the wicked.”

“You shall not pervert justice. You shall not show partiality, and you shall not take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.”

YHVH's Torah establishes justice as a protection against the misuse of power. Those responsible for judging were commanded not to distort justice, show partiality or allow bribery to influence their decisions. Justice was not to favour the powerful over the vulnerable, nor permit wrongdoing to go unchallenged.
The command to defend the vulnerable shows that justice also requires active protection. The fatherless and widow represented people who could easily be overlooked or exploited because they lacked the protection and influence available to others.
Guarding against abuse therefore requires more than punishing wrongdoing after it occurs. It requires refusing to enable oppression, protecting those who are vulnerable, and ensuring that authority is exercised according to righteousness rather than personal advantage.
Abuse thrives where power is allowed to operate without accountability. When people are afraid to speak, when the vulnerable are ignored, or when those with influence are protected from consequences, injustice can become established as though it were acceptable.
YHVH's Torah gives us a different standard. Justice requires impartiality, truth and the protection of those who may have less power. It also requires courage to confront wrongdoing rather than remaining silent simply because confronting it is uncomfortable.
May we therefore examine whether our actions, decisions and loyalties protect what is right. May we never use authority to exploit another person, nor remain silent when someone vulnerable is being harmed. Let us seek justice with integrity and use whatever influence we have to protect rather than abuse.
Heavenly Father, YHVH, thank You for teaching us to seek justice and to protect those who are vulnerable. Keep us from partiality, dishonesty, corruption and the misuse of authority.
Give us discernment to recognise abuse and courage to confront wrongdoing. Help us never to protect the reputation or position of a person at the expense of someone who has been harmed.
Strengthen those who are vulnerable and give them protection, truthful witnesses and righteous advocates. Guide those entrusted with authority to judge fairly, reject corruption and uphold what is right.
Teach us to use whatever influence You have given us responsibly. May we never become participants in oppression through silence, indifference or fear. Help us to defend the vulnerable, reprove the oppressor and pursue justice with integrity.
May Your justice guard those who are vulnerable and may righteousness prevail over every form of abuse.
