Discipline without Violence
βHe who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him seeks him with discipline.β
- Mishle (Proverbs) 13:24
βFathers, do not provoke your children, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of YHVH.β
- Ephsiyim (Ephesians) 6:4
βThe one who disciplines his son will have rest, and he will delight his being.β
- Mishle (Proverbs) 29:17
YHVH's instruction recognises that children require guidance, correction and discipline. Discipline is not the same as uncontrolled anger or violence. Its purpose is to teach, correct wrongdoing and develop wisdom rather than to satisfy the anger of the one giving the correction.
The wisdom literature connects loving discipline with the long-term good of the child. Correction that is motivated by love seeks to establish righteousness and responsible behaviour. It should therefore be purposeful, measured and directed toward restoration rather than humiliation or harm.
The Renewed Covenant likewise instructs fathers to raise their children in the discipline and instruction of YHVH without provoking them. Authority within the family carries responsibility. Those who have the power to correct must also exercise self-control and must never use their position as an excuse for cruelty or abuse.
Discipline becomes destructive when anger replaces instruction. A child may remember the fear of an angry parent, but fear alone does not teach wisdom, responsibility or righteousness.
YHVH's discipline is directed toward correction and growth. Likewise, those who are responsible for children should seek to correct behaviour without destroying dignity. Firm boundaries can exist without cruelty, and consequences can be applied without violence.
May we therefore examine the motives behind our correction. Are we seeking to teach, or merely reacting in anger? Are we helping a child understand what is right, or simply demanding obedience through fear?
Let us practise discipline with patience, consistency and self-control. May our correction protect rather than harm, teach rather than humiliate, and guide children toward wisdom and righteous character.
Heavenly Father, YHVH, thank You for teaching us the value of wisdom, correction and righteous discipline. Give parents, guardians, teachers and all who guide children patience, discernment and self-control.
Keep us from disciplining in anger, frustration or cruelty. Help us to recognise the difference between firm correction and violence, and teach us to establish boundaries that protect children while guiding them toward responsible behaviour.
Give us wisdom to choose appropriate consequences, explain what is wrong and restore relationships after correction. Help us never to use fear, humiliation or physical harm as substitutes for patient instruction.
Protect children from abuse and those who are responsible for them from losing control. Where violence is already present, bring truth to light and provide protection, intervention and healing.
May our homes and communities become places where children are corrected with dignity, taught with patience and guided toward wisdom, righteousness and the fear of YHVH.
Baruch YHVH. Emet.
βYHVH bless you and keep you;
YHVH make His face shine upon you,
and be gracious to you;
YHVH lift up His countenance upon you,
and give you peace.β
