Prohibition of Cursing Parents

📘 READING

“And he who curses his father or his mother shall certainly be put to death.”
- Shemot (Exodus) 21:17

“Everyone of you shall fear his mother and his father, and you shall guard My Shabbats. I am YHVH your Elohim.”
- Wayyiqra (Leviticus) 19:3

“Honour your father and your mother, so that your days may be prolonged upon the soil which YHVH your Elohim is giving you.”
- Shemot (Exodus) 20:12

🟫 MITSVOT FOCUS

YHVH's Torah places serious boundaries around how children speak about and treat their parents. The prohibition against cursing one's father or mother demonstrates that verbal contempt was not regarded as a harmless expression of anger. Speech could become an act of dishonour that damaged the order and dignity of the family.

The command to fear one's parents and the command to honour them establish a broader principle of reverence. This does not mean that parents are beyond correction or that their actions are always righteous. Rather, even when disagreement exists, YHVH's people are called to maintain appropriate respect and to avoid contempt, malicious speech and deliberate dishonour.

The severity of the Torah's penalty also demonstrates how seriously YHVH regarded rebellion expressed through contempt for parental authority. The family was part of the covenant community, and the treatment of parents was connected to the wider responsibility to live according to YHVH's righteous order.

🩵 REFLECTION

Words spoken in anger can cause lasting damage. A moment of rage may produce insults or curses that cannot simply be withdrawn after they have been spoken.

Honouring parents does not require us to approve wrongdoing, remain silent about abuse or compromise obedience to YHVH. It does require us to distinguish between righteous correction and contemptuous speech. We can disagree without deliberately humiliating, insulting or cursing those who raised us.

May we therefore examine our words, especially when we are angry or hurt. May we refuse to allow frustration to turn into contempt, and may we learn to address difficult family situations with truth, self-control and dignity.

Let us honour our parents according to YHVH's instruction while remaining faithful to His higher authority. May our speech build what is righteous rather than destroy relationships through anger, bitterness and deliberate dishonour.

👐 PRAYER

Heavenly Father, YHVH, thank You for teaching us to honour our parents and to guard the words that come from our mouths. Give us self-control when we are angry, frustrated or hurt.

Keep us from cursing, insulting, humiliating or deliberately dishonouring our parents. Help us to remember that words can cause deep wounds, and teach us to speak truth with wisdom, restraint and respect.

Where parents have acted wrongly, give us courage to recognise what is wrong without responding with hatred or contempt. Help us to maintain appropriate honour while remaining faithful to Your righteousness and truth.

Bring healing to families where harsh words, bitterness or long-standing conflict have caused division. Give wisdom to parents and children alike, and teach us to resolve disagreements without cruelty or deliberate dishonour.

May our speech reflect Your wisdom. Keep our mouths from words that destroy, and teach us to use our words to correct, reconcile, encourage and build according to Your will.

Baruch YHVH. Emet.
