False Witnesses – Prohibition
“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.”
- Shemot (Exodus) 20:16
“A false witness shall not go unpunished, and he who speaks lies shall not escape.”
- Mishlei (Proverbs) 19:5
“These six things YHVH hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him: ... a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren.”
- Mishlei (Proverbs) 6:16, 19
YHVH forbids false witness because it destroys justice, damages reputations, and undermines trust within His covenant community. Whether spoken in a court of law, among family members, or within everyday conversation, false testimony corrupts righteousness and harms both the innocent and the guilty.
The Torah teaches that truth is not optional for those who belong to YHVH. Messiah likewise identified truth as a defining characteristic of His followers. A faithful servant therefore refuses to spread rumours, distort facts, or make accusations without evidence, choosing instead to speak with honesty, integrity, and love.
Our words have lasting consequences. A careless statement or an unverified accusation can leave wounds that endure long after the words have been spoken. Choosing truth, even when it is difficult or inconvenient, honours YHVH and strengthens the bonds of trust between His people.
As ambassadors of Messiah, we are called to be known for truthful speech. Let our words build confidence rather than suspicion, restore rather than divide, and always reflect the righteous character of our heavenly Father.
Heavenly Father, YHVH, guard our hearts and our tongues from every form of falsehood. Teach us to love truth, to speak with wisdom, and to act with integrity in every circumstance. Give us discernment to recognise deception, courage to defend what is right, and humility to correct our own words when we have spoken carelessly. May our lives bear faithful witness to Your truth and bring honour to Your holy Name.
