Sanctity of Life Above Compensation
“You shall not take a ransom for the life of a murderer who is guilty of death, but he shall surely be put to death.”
- Bemidbar (Numbers) 35:31
“You shall not pollute the land in which you are, for blood defiles the land; and no atonement can be made for the land for the blood that is shed on it, except by the blood of him who shed it.”

“Whoever sheds man's blood, by man his blood is shed, for in the image of Elohim He made man.”
- Bereshith (Genesis) 9:6
Human life is sacred because every person bears the image of Elohim. For this reason, YHVH declared that no payment or compensation could ever be accepted in place of justice for deliberate murder. The value of a human life cannot be measured in silver, gold or possessions.
This mitzvah teaches that righteousness always places the sanctity of life above material gain. Justice must never be influenced by wealth, position or personal relationships. As YHVH's people, we are called to uphold His righteous standards and to honour the precious gift of life that He alone gives.
Our world often places a price on everything, yet YHVH reminds us that life itself is beyond price. Every interaction with another person should reflect the understanding that they are created in His image and are worthy of dignity, respect and compassion.
As we prepare our hearts for Shabbat, let us examine whether our attitudes, words and actions honour the value that YHVH places on every human life. May we become instruments of justice, mercy and peace in a world that desperately needs His truth.
Heavenly Father, YHVH, thank You for the gift and sanctity of human life. Help us to value every person as You do and never allow selfish gain or personal advantage to cloud our judgment. Fill us with integrity, compassion and a steadfast commitment to justice according to Your Word. Prepare our hearts as we enter Your holy Shabbat, that we may honour You in all we say and do.
