Justice - Channeling Zeal Lawfully
βThe congregation shall judge between the slayer and the avenger of blood according to these right-rulings.β
- Bemidbar (Numbers) 35:24
βAnd the congregation shall deliver the slayer from the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall return him to the city of refuge where he had fled.β
- Bemidbar (Numbers) 35:25
βFor the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of Elohim.β
- Ya'aqov (James) 1:20
YHVH did not condemn zeal for justice, but He required that such zeal be governed by His righteous instruction. Even the blood avenger was not permitted to act apart from the lawful process that YHVH had established. Justice was to be administered through careful examination, impartial judgment and obedience to His commandments rather than through uncontrolled emotion.
This mitzvah reminds us that zeal becomes righteous only when it is submitted to YHVH's authority. Passion without wisdom can produce injustice, but zeal guided by His Torah protects both truth and mercy.
It is easy to become passionate when we witness wrongdoing, yet YHVH calls us to temper our zeal with humility, patience and discernment. Righteousness is never advanced through uncontrolled anger or impulsive action, but through faithful obedience to His Word.
May we learn to direct our passion toward building peace, defending truth and pursuing justice in ways that honour YHVH. When our zeal is guided by His wisdom, it becomes a powerful witness to His righteous Kingdom.
Heavenly Father, YHVH, thank You for teaching us that true zeal must always be governed by Your wisdom and righteousness. Guard us from acting out of anger or pride, and teach us to pursue justice with humility, patience and discernment. May our words, decisions and actions always reflect Your truth, mercy and holiness. Help us to serve You faithfully in every circumstance and to honour Your Name in all that we do.
Baruch YHVH. Emet.
Shalom until tomorrow.
