Shalom, Mitspacha!
Prohibition of taking bribes
“And take no bribe, for a bribe blinds the clear-sighted and subverts the words of the righteous.”
- Shemoth (Exodus) 23:8
“You shall not twist right-ruling, you shall not show partiality, nor take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.”
- Deḇarim (Deuteronomy) 16:19
YHVH commands His people to reject bribery in all its forms. A bribe seeks to influence judgment, decision-making, or conduct through personal gain rather than truth and righteousness. Whether through money, gifts, favors, influence, or hidden benefits, bribery corrupts justice and damages trust within society.
The people of YHVH are called to pursue integrity and impartiality. Decisions should be based on truth, righteousness, and wisdom rather than personal advantage. Justice can only flourish where honesty and accountability are maintained.
Bribery does not only occur in courts or government. It can appear wherever people allow personal benefit to influence decisions that should be guided by truth and fairness. Sometimes the temptation is obvious; at other times it comes through subtle pressure, favors, relationships, or opportunities for gain.
Scripture warns that even wise people can be influenced when integrity is compromised. A heart devoted to YHVH learns to value righteousness above personal profit. True integrity is demonstrated when a person chooses what is right even when compromise appears beneficial.
Abba YHVH, teach us to walk in integrity, honesty, and righteousness. Guard our hearts from greed, corruption, and the desire for personal gain at the expense of truth. Help us to make decisions that honor You and reflect Your justice. Strengthen us to remain impartial, trustworthy, and faithful in every circumstance. Let our lives be a testimony of integrity before You and before others.
Baruch YHVH. Emet.
Shalom until tomorrow.
