Prohibition of appointing unqualified judges / Judgment and mercy (Bemidbar / Numbers 15โ21)
Abba YHVH, thank You for bringing us into this set-apart Shabbat. Thank You for Your justice, mercy, wisdom, and righteous instruction. As we rest in Your presence today, teach us to value righteous leadership, sound judgment, and compassionate obedience. Guard our hearts from corruption, pride, and rebellion, and help us to walk faithfully according to Your truth. Let this Shabbat renew our spirits and strengthen our commitment to honor You in every area of life.

As we partake in communion, we remember the covenant faithfulness of YHVH and His mercy throughout every generation. We remember Yahusha the Messiah, who walked perfectly in righteousness, truth, justice, and compassion. May this time remind us that judgment must always remain rooted in wisdom and mercy, and that those who follow YHVH are called to reflect His righteous character before the world.
โYou shall not show partiality in right-ruling. Hear the small as well as the great. Do not be afraid of anyoneโs face, for the right-ruling belongs to Elohim.โ

โAnd Mosheh made a bronze serpent and put it on a pole. And it came to be, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.โ

YHVH warns against placing unqualified individuals into positions of judgment and authority. Leadership without wisdom, integrity, discipline, or reverence for righteousness leads to corruption, injustice, confusion, and suffering. Judges and leaders are called to uphold truth faithfully, without favoritism, greed, or selfish ambition.
Throughout Scripture, leadership is treated as a sacred responsibility rather than merely a position of influence. Those entrusted with authority affect the stability and well-being of entire communities. The people of YHVH are therefore instructed to recognize and support leaders whose lives reflect wisdom, honesty, accountability, and righteous character.
This weekโs Torah focus reveals the balance between the judgment and mercy of YHVH. In the wilderness, the people repeatedly struggled with unbelief, rebellion, impatience, and disobedience. Judgment came upon the nation because YHVH is holy and just. Yet alongside judgment, His mercy remained visible through forgiveness, provision, healing, and continued guidance.
The bronze serpent in the wilderness illustrates this balance powerfully. Though judgment came because of sin and rebellion, YHVH also provided a path for healing and restoration. His mercy does not cancel righteousness, nor does His judgment eliminate compassion. Believers are called to reflect this same balance by standing firmly for truth while remaining patient, humble, and merciful toward others.
Consider the qualities you value in leaders and whether those qualities reflect the standards established by YHVH. Pray for discernment to recognize righteous leadership and wisdom to avoid supporting corruption, compromise, or ungodly influence.
Also reflect upon the balance of judgment and mercy within your own conduct. Are you walking in both truth and compassion? Seek to uphold righteousness without pride and to extend mercy without compromising truth. Let your life reflect the wisdom, justice, and mercy of YHVH in every relationship and responsibility.
Abba YHVH, thank You for Your perfect justice and abundant mercy. Raise up righteous leaders who walk in wisdom, humility, integrity, and reverence before You. Guard communities and nations from corruption, unrighteous judgment, and ungodly leadership. Teach us to walk in discernment, compassion, and faithfulness in every responsibility entrusted to us. Help us to reflect Your balance of truth and mercy so that our lives may honor Your Name and strengthen those around us.
