Requirement of Multiple Witnesses
“One witness shall not rise against a man concerning any iniquity or any sin that he commits; by the mouth of two witnesses or by the mouth of three witnesses the matter shall be established.”
- Devariym (Deuteronomy) 19:15
“Do not receive an accusation against an elder except from two or three witnesses.”
- 1 Timothy 5:19
“This will be the third time I am coming to you. ‘By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established.’”
- 2 Corinthians 13:1
YHVH requires that serious matters be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses, ensuring that justice rests upon verified truth rather than accusation, assumption or personal bias.
Truth matters deeply to YHVH because His very nature is truth. For this reason, His Torah establishes that a single accusation is never sufficient to determine guilt in serious matters. The requirement for two or three witnesses protects both the innocent from false accusation and the community from careless judgment.
This principle extends beyond ancient Israel's courts. It teaches us to resist gossip, rumours and premature conclusions. In an age where accusations can spread instantly, disciples of Messiah are called to verify facts before forming judgments or repeating claims about others.
The apostles carried this same standard into the assemblies of believers, demonstrating that YHVH's principles of justice did not change. Whether resolving disputes, correcting leaders or discerning truth, righteousness requires evidence, integrity and patience.
As we walk in Torah, may we become people whose words are trustworthy, whose judgments are fair and whose commitment to truth reflects the righteous character of our Heavenly Father.
Heavenly Father, YHVH, thank You for establishing justice upon truth rather than accusation. Guard our hearts from gossip, false assumptions and hasty judgments. Give us wisdom to seek truth carefully, patience to listen well and integrity to speak only what is true and edifying. May our words and decisions always reflect Your righteousness, bringing honour to Your Name and peace among Your people.
