Justice β Protecting Reputation
"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."
β Shemot (Exodus) 20:16
"You shall do no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor nor honor the person of the mighty. In righteousness you shall judge your neighbor."
β Vayikra (Leviticus) 19:15
Justice in the Torah is not only about courts and judges β it is about how we handle the name and reputation of another person. To bear false witness includes exaggeration, distortion, assumption, and repeating accusations without proper evidence.
A personβs reputation is precious. Once damaged, it is difficult to restore. Protecting the dignity of others is part of walking in righteousness.
In moments of conflict or disagreement, it is easy to speak quickly and judge harshly. But the Torah calls us to restraint and fairness. Before we repeat a report or form an opinion, we must ask:
Justice begins in the heart before it is ever seen in a courtroom.
Abba YHVH, teach us to love justice and to walk in righteousness. Guard us from false witness, careless accusations, and partial judgment. Help us protect the reputation of others as we would desire our own to be protected. May our words and decisions reflect Your justice and bring honor to Your Name.
Baruch YHVH.
Shalom until tomorrow.
