Shalom, Mishpacha!
Prohibition of following the majority in evil / Standing at the threshold of covenant and harvest
“You shall not follow a crowd to do evil, nor shall you testify in a dispute so as to turn aside after many to pervert justice.”
- Shemoth (Exodus) 23:2
“And it came to be on the third new moon after the children of Yisra’ĕl had come out of the land of Mitsrayim, on this day, that they came to the Wilderness of Sinai.”
- Shemoth (Exodus) 19:1
“And they ate of the stored grain of the land on the morrow after the Pĕsaḥ, unleavened bread and roasted grain on this same day.”
- Yahoshua (Joshua) 5:11
YHVH commands His people not to follow the majority into unrighteousness, corruption, compromise, or false judgment. Truth is not determined by numbers, popularity, social pressure, or public opinion. Righteousness remains righteousness even when few walk in it.
The journey toward Shavu'ot reminds us that covenant obedience often requires standing apart from the crowd. As Yisra’ĕl approached the mountain of YHVH, they were being prepared to become a set-apart people governed by His voice rather than the ways of the nations.
Shavu'ot also carries the remembrance of harvest and provision. Nearly forty years after standing before Sinai, Yisra’ĕl entered the Promised Land and partook of its produce for the first time. Covenant faithfulness and harvest became joined together through obedience, endurance, and trust in YHVH.
The pressure to follow the majority can be subtle and persistent. Many compromise truth in order to avoid rejection, conflict, ridicule, or isolation. Yet throughout Scripture, the faithful remnant often stood against the direction of the crowd.
As the final evening of the Omer arrives, the journey stands at the threshold of fulfillment. Tomorrow the counting reaches completion at Shavu'ot - the appointed time connected with covenant, instruction, and harvest. The people of YHVH stand spiritually at the foot of the mountain once again, preparing their hearts before Him.
Consider whether your decisions are shaped more by the voice of YHVH or by the expectations of the surrounding world. The narrow path has never been the popular path, yet it remains the path that leads to life and covenant faithfulness.
Forty-nine days have now been counted. The seven complete weeks of refinement reach their conclusion as the people prepare for Shavu'ot. The journey from deliverance toward covenant has brought Yisra’ĕl to the foot of the mountain of YHVH, where His voice would soon thunder forth instruction, holiness, and covenant responsibility.
This final stage of the counting also points forward to the fulfillment of promise and provision. Nearly forty years later, Yisra’ĕl would finally enter the Promised Land and partake of its first harvest. The wilderness journey, the covenant at Sinai, and the harvest of the land became deeply connected through faithfulness, endurance, and obedience to YHVH.
As this final Omer evening closes, hearts are called to prepare reverently for the appointed time of Shavu'ot.
YHVH, strengthen us to stand firmly in truth even when the majority chooses compromise or unrighteousness. Teach us to walk faithfully according to Your voice rather than the pressures of the world around us.
As Shavu'ot approaches, prepare our hearts before You. Lead us deeper into covenant faithfulness, obedience, wisdom, and reverence. Just as Yisra’ĕl stood before Your mountain and later partook of the harvest in the Promised Land, teach us to trust You through every stage of the journey.
