Justice – honoring divine order
“You shall appoint judges and officers in all your gates, which YHVH your Elohim gives you, according to your tribes. And they shall judge the people with righteous judgment.
You shall not distort justice, you shall not show partiality, nor take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.
Follow justice, and justice alone, so that you live and inherit the land which YHVH your Elohim is giving you.”
- Devarim (Deuteronomy) 16:18–20
“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; loving-commitment and truth go before Your face.”
- Tehillim (Psalms) 89:14
“For YHVH is our Judge, YHVH is our Lawgiver, YHVH is our King; He saves us.”
- Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 33:22
YHVH is not the author of confusion, corruption, or injustice. His order is established in righteousness, truth, and faithfulness. Justice is therefore more than a human system of rules or a decision made by someone in authority. It reflects the character of YHVH and requires us to respect His instructions in the way we judge, lead, work, and treat one another.
Honouring divine order begins with recognising that authority carries responsibility. Judges must judge impartially, leaders must act with integrity, and those entrusted with responsibility must not use their position for personal gain. Bribery, favouritism, dishonesty, and the deliberate twisting of facts undermine justice because they place human interests above what is right. No position, title, relationship, or personal advantage gives anyone permission to disregard the standards established by YHVH.
Divine order also calls each of us to personal accountability. We cannot demand justice from others while excusing our own dishonesty, disobedience, or unfair treatment of people. We must examine our motives, speak truthfully, fulfil our commitments, and correct our conduct when we discover that we have acted wrongly. Faithfulness in ordinary decisions helps establish a life that honours YHVH's righteous order.
Respecting divine order does not mean blindly approving every decision made by a human authority. Human beings can misuse power, misinterpret instructions, and make unjust rulings. We must therefore measure human decisions against the righteous standards of YHVH rather than treating position or influence as proof that someone is right. Where injustice occurs, we should seek truth, protect those who are vulnerable, and pursue correction through responsible and truthful means.
Justice and compassion must work together without either being used to cancel the other. Compassion must not become an excuse to conceal wrongdoing, and justice must not become a pretext for cruelty or personal revenge. YHVH calls His people to act fairly, speak truth, show appropriate mercy, and uphold what is right even when doing so is difficult or unpopular.
When we honour the divine order established by YHVH, we acknowledge that His wisdom stands above our preferences. We become more careful in our judgments, more responsible in the use of authority, and more consistent in our conduct. In this way, justice becomes a daily expression of obedience rather than merely an ideal we expect others to uphold.
Do my decisions reflect the righteous standards of YHVH, or do personal preferences and relationships influence my judgment?
How do I respond when someone in authority acts unfairly or uses a position of responsibility for personal gain?
Am I willing to acknowledge and correct my own wrongdoing instead of demanding accountability only from others?
How can I uphold both justice and compassion without compromising truth?
YHVH our Elohim, You are the righteous Judge, the Lawgiver, and the King. We thank You that Your order is founded upon righteousness, truth, and faithfulness. Teach us to honour Your instructions and to recognise that every responsibility entrusted to us must be exercised with integrity.
Give wisdom and discernment to judges, leaders, and all who make decisions affecting the lives of others. Keep them from bribery, favouritism, corruption, and the misuse of authority. Strengthen those who are committed to doing what is right, especially when they face pressure to compromise their integrity.
Examine our own hearts and reveal every place where pride, selfishness, prejudice, or personal advantage has influenced our judgment. Give us humility to acknowledge our wrongdoing, courage to make corrections, and faithfulness to treat others fairly. Help us to speak truthfully, honour our commitments, and accept accountability for our choices.
Protect those who suffer under unjust decisions, corrupt leadership, or the abuse of power. Provide them with help, wise counsel, and opportunities for truth to be established. Teach us to respond to injustice without hatred or revenge, and to pursue correction through righteous and responsible action.
Help us to unite justice with compassion and firmness with humility. May we never use mercy to excuse wrongdoing or use justice as a weapon for personal retaliation. Teach us to uphold what is right even when it costs us something, and to place Your standards above human approval.
Establish truth, righteousness, and faithful conduct within our families and communities. Help us to honour the order You have established and to serve one another with fairness and integrity. May our lives bear witness to Your righteous character in every decision we make.
Baruch YHVH. Emet.
“YHVH bless you and guard you;
YHVH make His face shine upon you, and show favour to you;
YHVH lift up His face upon you, and give you peace.”
- Bemidbar (Numbers) 6:24–26
Shalom until tomorrow.
