⭐ THEME

Prohibition of consulting familiar spirits

📘 READING

“Do not turn to mediums or familiar spirits; do not seek them out, to be defiled by them. I am YHVH your Elohim.”
- Vayiqra (Leviticus) 19:31

“There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire,
one who practices divination, a soothsayer, one who interprets omens, a sorcerer, one who conjures spells, a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead.
For whoever does these things is an abomination to YHVH.”
- Devarim (Deuteronomy) 18:10–12

“When they say to you, ‘Seek those who are mediums and familiar spirits, who whisper and mutter,’ should not a people seek their Elohim?
Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living? To the Torah and to the testimony!
If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”
- Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 8:19–20

🟫 MITSVOT FOCUS

YHVH commands His people not to seek guidance from mediums, familiar spirits, or those who claim to communicate with the dead. This prohibition is not an arbitrary restriction intended to leave us without answers. It protects our relationship with YHVH and directs us to seek truth and guidance from Him rather than from forbidden spiritual sources. Our desire for knowledge must never become more important than our obedience to His instructions.

The temptation to consult familiar spirits can arise from grief, fear, curiosity, uncertainty, or a longing to communicate with someone who has died. People may seek reassurance about the future, answers to troubling questions, or a sense of control when circumstances feel beyond their understanding. Yet a sincere desire for comfort does not make every source of comfort trustworthy. YHVH calls us to bring our questions and burdens to Him instead of turning to practices He has prohibited.

The prohibition also teaches us to distinguish between the desire for spiritual understanding and the pursuit of forbidden spiritual access. Not every unusual experience, dream, impression, or unexplained event should be treated as a message from the spiritual realm. We must exercise discernment, test what we hear against the Torah, and refuse to let fear, fascination, or persuasive claims replace the instruction of YHVH. What appears mysterious or powerful is not automatically true or worthy of trust.

YHVH does not leave His people without direction. He has given His instructions, the testimony of Scripture, the wisdom to seek righteous counsel, and the privilege of bringing our concerns before Him in prayer. When we do not know what lies ahead, we can still choose faithful obedience today. We do not need forbidden knowledge of the future in order to walk responsibly in the present.

Those who have previously sought mediums or familiar spirits should not respond by hiding their past or surrendering to fear. The right response is to turn away from the prohibited practice, acknowledge the wrong, seek YHVH's forgiveness, and renew their commitment to His ways. We must also avoid treating people who are struggling with these matters with cruelty or contempt. Truth must be upheld, while correction should be offered with humility, compassion, and a sincere desire for restoration.

Honouring this mitsvah means recognising that not every spiritual invitation should be accepted and not every claimed source of knowledge deserves our attention. We belong to YHVH and must seek His direction within the boundaries He has established. When uncertainty arises, let us choose faithfulness over forbidden access, truth over fascination, and trust in YHVH over the desire to control what He has not revealed.

🩵 REFLECTION

Have fear, grief, curiosity, or uncertainty ever tempted me to seek answers from a source that YHVH has prohibited?

Do I test spiritual claims against the Torah, or am I sometimes drawn to something simply because it seems mysterious or powerful?

When I do not know what the future holds, am I willing to trust YHVH and obey the guidance He has already given?

How can I uphold this mitsvah with conviction while showing humility and compassion toward those who need correction or restoration?

👐 PRAYER

YHVH our Elohim, we acknowledge that You are the source of truth and that Your instructions protect us from paths that lead away from You. Forgive us for every occasion when fear, curiosity, grief, or the desire for control has drawn our attention toward forbidden spiritual practices. Give us hearts that value obedience above secret knowledge and faithfulness above fascination.

Strengthen us to reject every invitation to consult mediums, familiar spirits, or those who claim to summon the dead. Guard our thoughts and decisions against deception, intimidation, and the misuse of spiritual claims. Give us discernment to test what we hear and experience against Your instructions, and keep us from treating mystery or apparent power as proof of truth.

When we face uncertainty, help us seek You through prayer, study Your Word, and receive wise counsel from those who honour Your ways. Teach us to accept that we do not need to know everything about tomorrow in order to walk faithfully today. Give us patience to wait, courage to obey, and trust in Your wisdom when answers are not immediately clear.

Remember those who are grieving, frightened, lonely, or desperate for answers about loved ones who have died. Comfort them in their sorrow and lead them away from practices that You have forbidden. Give them compassionate and trustworthy people who can support them without exploiting their pain or encouraging them to seek forbidden spiritual access.

For those who have become involved in such practices, grant humility to acknowledge the wrong, courage to turn away, and strength to remain faithful to You. Help us to correct others without cruelty, to speak truth without pride, and to offer support without compromising Your instructions. May our conduct reflect both the seriousness of obedience and the compassion needed for restoration.

Establish our hearts firmly in Your truth, YHVH. May we seek Your guidance rather than forbidden sources, walk in the light of Your instructions, and remain faithful even when uncertainty tests us. Keep our families and communities steadfast in the Ancient Path, with discernment to reject deception and wisdom to uphold what is righteous.

Baruch YHVH. Emet.
