Faithfulness within Covenant
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and cleave to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”
- Bereshith (Genesis) 2:24
“Let marriage be respected among all, and the marriage bed be undefiled, for Elohim shall judge those who are immoral and adulterers.”
- Ibrim (Hebrews) 13:4
“Know therefore that YHVH your Elohim, He is Elohim, the trustworthy El who guards covenant and kindness for a thousand generations with those who love Him and guard His commands.”
- Devarim (Deuteronomy) 7:9
YHVH is faithful to His covenant and keeps His Word. Yesterday we considered the sanctity of marriage as a covenantal union. Today we build on that foundation by considering what faithfulness within covenant actually requires.
A covenant is not merely a declaration of good intentions. It creates an ongoing obligation to remain loyal, truthful and responsible. Devarim 7:9 presents YHVH as the trustworthy El who guards covenant and kindness with those who love Him and guard His commands.
Faithfulness within marriage therefore involves far more than simply avoiding adultery. It includes honesty, loyalty, keeping one's word, protecting the relationship, fulfilling responsibilities and resisting selfish desires that could damage the covenant.
The Renewed Covenant continues to honour marriage and covenant commitment. Faithfulness is demonstrated through daily choices, especially when circumstances become difficult or when personal desires compete with covenant responsibilities.
Covenant faithfulness is tested most clearly when circumstances become difficult. It is easy to speak of commitment when everything is going well, but genuine faithfulness is revealed when patience, forgiveness, sacrifice and perseverance are required.
YHVH's own faithfulness provides the pattern. He does not treat covenant as temporary or dependent upon convenience. Those who belong to Him are therefore called to reflect that same integrity in the commitments they make to others.
Faithfulness is built through daily decisions - keeping promises, speaking truth, rejecting secrecy and deception, protecting trust and refusing to allow temptation or resentment to destroy what has been entrusted to us.
At the same time, covenant faithfulness never requires a person to tolerate abuse, conceal injustice or remain silent when someone is being harmed. Protecting what is righteous includes protecting the vulnerable and confronting wrongdoing.
For those who are married or preparing for marriage, let covenant be treated as a sacred responsibility rather than merely a personal arrangement. Let every commitment we make be approached with honesty, reverence and the determination to remain faithful.
Heavenly Father, YHVH, thank You for Your faithfulness and for the covenants You have established. Teach us to reflect Your trustworthy character in every commitment we make.
Strengthen husbands and wives to remain faithful to one another. Protect marriages from adultery, deception, temptation, bitterness and selfishness. Give couples wisdom and humility when they face difficulties, and help them to communicate truthfully, forgive where appropriate and honour their covenant responsibilities.
Protect those who are vulnerable to abuse, manipulation or coercion. Give them safety, wisdom and righteous support. Help Your people never to confuse faithfulness with enabling wrongdoing or concealing injustice.
Guide those who are preparing for marriage to understand the seriousness of covenant commitment and to choose relationships marked by truth, loyalty, mutual honour and responsibility.
Help us also to remain faithful in every other righteous commitment we make. May our words be trustworthy, our actions consistent and our lives a reflection of Your faithfulness.
Baruch YHVH. Emet.
“YHVH bless you and keep you;
YHVH make His face shine upon you,
and be gracious to you;
YHVH lift up His countenance upon you,
and give you peace.”
- Bemidbar (Numbers) 6:24-26
Shalom until tomorrow.
