🌿 SPECIAL SHABBAT — Yom Teru'ah Day 6, Shevi'i 6, 6028 AA

Shalom, Mitspacha!

⭐ THEME

Justice – safeguarding family order

🤲🏻 OPENING PRAYER

Heavenly Father, YHVH, we come before You with gratitude as we enter Yom Teru'ah Day 6. Thank You for calling us to awaken to Your ways and to recognise the responsibilities You have placed within our relationships and families.

Teach us to understand that justice begins with respecting the order You established. Help us to recognise the responsibilities that come with being part of a family, and to protect the dignity, safety and proper boundaries of those entrusted to us.

Give us wisdom to distinguish between authority that serves and authority that harms, between correction that restores and control that oppresses, and between responsibility and neglect.

May Your Torah instruct our hearts today. Let us hear the call of Yom Teru'ah not merely as a sound, but as an awakening to faithful obedience.

Baruch YHVH. Emet.

🍷 COMMUNION

As we partake of the bread and the cup, we remember the covenant and the responsibility that comes with belonging to YHVH.

The table reminds us that covenant relationship is never merely about ourselves. We are called to walk in righteousness toward one another, to honour the relationships entrusted to us, and to protect those who are vulnerable.

May this remembrance lead us to examine the way we exercise responsibility within our families and communities. May we seek restoration where relationships have been damaged, wisdom where boundaries have become unclear, and justice where responsibilities have been neglected.

📜 TORAH READING

“Every one of you shall fear his mother and his father, and keep My Shabbats: I am YHVH your Elohim.”
- Vayiqra 19:3

“Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which YHVH your Elohim gives you.”
- Shemot 20:12

“For anyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother. His blood shall be upon him.”
- Vayiqra 20:9

“Also in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a Shabbat-rest, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a set-apart gathering.”
- Vayiqra 23:24

📖 MESSAGE

Justice within a family begins with recognising that relationships carry responsibilities. YHVH did not establish family merely as a social arrangement, but gave instructions concerning honour, authority, responsibility and the treatment of one another.

The Torah places honour toward parents alongside obedience to YHVH's appointed times. This reminds us that reverence for YHVH must shape the way we conduct ourselves within the most basic relationships of human life.

Family order does not mean that every exercise of authority is automatically righteous. Authority carries responsibility. Parents are responsible for those entrusted to their care, older members of a family carry responsibilities toward younger ones, and every person remains accountable to YHVH for the way they treat others.

Justice therefore requires more than demanding respect. It requires behaving in a way that is worthy of respect.

Where authority becomes domination, family order is damaged. Where responsibility is abandoned, those who depend upon others can become vulnerable. Where correction becomes humiliation, dignity is undermined. Where wrongdoing is concealed merely to preserve appearances, justice is denied.

The Torah does not teach us to protect the appearance of order while ignoring unrighteousness. Instead, it teaches us that YHVH sees the conduct of every person and holds each one accountable.

This is particularly important when considering those who have less power within a family. Children, elderly people and vulnerable family members can depend upon others to protect them. Justice requires that strength be exercised with restraint and responsibility.

Safeguarding family order therefore means safeguarding the responsibilities attached to each relationship. It means refusing to use position, age, authority or dependence as an opportunity for exploitation. It means correcting wrongdoing rather than hiding it, establishing appropriate boundaries rather than ignoring them, and seeking restoration wherever righteousness allows.

We must also recognise that family order is not preserved by silence when harm is taking place. Silence can sometimes protect the appearance of peace while allowing injustice to continue. Faithful responsibility may require difficult conversations, firm boundaries, intervention, or seeking appropriate help.

YHVH's order is not designed to crush people. It is designed to establish righteousness, responsibility and protection.

As Yom Teru'ah continues to awaken us, let the call of the King remind us that our private conduct matters. The way we treat those closest to us is part of our walk before YHVH.

May we therefore examine our responsibilities carefully. May parents lead with wisdom rather than domination. May children learn honour without being taught to tolerate wrongdoing. May families establish boundaries that protect dignity. May those with authority use it for protection. And may every person remember that YHVH is the ultimate Judge over every relationship.

Justice begins where responsibility is taken seriously.

🌙 YOM TERU'AH DAY 6: Awakening and kingship

Yom Teru'ah calls us to awaken and recognise the kingship of YHVH. The sounding of the shofar is a call to attention: to hear, to remember, and to respond.

Today, that awakening reminds us that the order of our families and relationships is also part of our obedience. The King calls us to safeguard what He has entrusted to us and to exercise responsibility according to His Torah.

May we not merely hear the call, but allow it to awaken us to the responsibilities we carry toward those around us.

🤲🏻 CLOSING PRAYER

Heavenly Father, YHVH, thank You for Your Torah and for the instruction You give us concerning family, responsibility and justice.

Forgive us where we have treated responsibility lightly, where we have demanded honour without behaving honourably, or where we have remained silent when protection was needed.

Teach parents and caregivers to lead with wisdom, patience and righteous responsibility. Protect children from neglect, exploitation and abuse. Strengthen families where trust has been damaged, and bring truth into situations where wrongdoing has been hidden.

Give wisdom to those who must establish boundaries within their families. Give courage to those who need to speak when something is wrong. Give humility to those who need correction, and give strength to those who are carrying responsibilities that have become heavy.

We pray for elderly people who depend upon others for care. We pray for people with disabilities and for those whose vulnerability can make them dependent upon the decisions of others. Protect them from neglect, manipulation and exploitation.

We pray for families where authority has been misused. Bring justice where justice is needed, protection where protection is needed, and restoration where restoration is possible.

We pray for children who have been harmed within their own families. Surround them with people who will believe them, protect them and act responsibly on their behalf.

We pray for those who are trying to rebuild trust after family relationships have been broken. Give wisdom to know when reconciliation is appropriate and when firm boundaries are necessary for safety.

As we continue through Yom Teru'ah, keep us awake to Your voice. Teach us to recognise that safeguarding family order requires justice, responsibility and courage.

May the call of the King continue to awaken us to faithful obedience. Let our homes, families and communities reflect righteousness rather than merely the appearance of order.

Baruch YHVH. Emet.
